Trauma is an emotional response to any stressful event that seriously threatens your life or sense of security. Some people experience it directly while some experience it by witnessing. It may be a single occurrence trauma like a traffic accident or a long-term trauma like living through war.
These traumatic events may develop post-traumatic stress symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a mental disorder that develops after exposure to a traumatic event or series of events. This exposure may include directly experiencing an event, witnessing a terrible event in the lives of others, or learning that a traumatic event occurred to a close family member or friend. It can also emerge as a result of frequent exposure to disturbing details of trauma.
Complex PTSD can occur after experiencing chronic (long-term) trauma. People who experience long-term trauma tend to have additional symptoms like difficulty in emotional regulation along with PTSD symptoms.
During World War 1, the term psychological trauma of warfare was formally recognized by doctors and society for the first time. PTSD has been referred to by a variety of names in the past, including "shell shock" during World War I and "combat fatigue" or “war neurosis” during World War.
